Back to the Future

Description

Marty McFly, a teenager living in the 1980s, is accidentally transported 30 years into the past in the film Back to the Future, where he prevents his own parents from meeting. Marty must figure out a way to bring together his future parents and find his way back to his own time in order to avoid annihilation at the hands of a temporal paradox. Both goals are necessary for Marty's survival.

The LJN game is completely different from the computer versions, and the gameplay consists of a literal race against time that is interspersed with brief arcade minigames. In the main portion of the game, the player assumes the role of Marty and guides him through Hill Valley in the 1950s from an overhead perspective. His path is blocked by a variety of antagonists that are historically accurate, such as bullies, hula hoop girls, bumblebees, and park benches. Because the camera moves forward at a consistent rate, the player needs to keep Marty moving in order to avoid colliding with any obstacles. When Marty is hit by one, he falls and loses a life in the process. The player must also collect clocks that are strewn about the neighborhood in order to prevent the photograph of Marty from deteriorating. In the event that it completely disappears, Marty will cease to exist.

There are three different minigames that can be accessed via street running sections. In these, Marty has to throw milkshakes at the approaching bullies, deflect kisses (shown as hearts) from his mother, and collect notes in order to rock out on stage at the high school dance. The final stage plays out similarly to the street sections in that the player is tasked with steering the DeLorean time machine and amassing sufficient power to complete the level (shown as lightning bolts instead of clocks).
