Agent Armstrong

Description

Agent Armstrong is an interesting addition to the action-packed PlayStation catalogue. Released in 1997, this game attempts to combine the dynamic elements of an arcade shooter with clever level design and a slightly comic book feel. The result is a mixed experience that will appeal to some gamers for its nostalgia, but won't necessarily impress audiences looking for modern game mechanics or depth.

The game's story follows the title character, the intrepid Agent Armstrong, on a mission against an insidious crime syndicate. The archetypal charismatic hero with bulging muscles and a sharp wit is exactly the kind of character you'd expect to see in a 90s cartoon. The story itself is simple, but this is offset by the more verbose scenes and dialogue that add a certain charm to the play.

The gameplay mechanics are fairly standard for a 2.5D action platformer of the era. Players move both horizontally and vertically with the task table, fighting enemies and overcoming various obstacles. Agent Armstrong is equipped with a variety of weapons ranging from conventional firearms to futuristic inventions, bringing variety to the game itself. However, the controls do have their flaws at times, which can be annoying especially in the more challenging passages of the game.

The level design deserves praise for its creativity and variability. Each level offers new challenges and obstacles, thus keeping the gameplay fresh and interesting. There are also secret areas and hidden bonuses that encourage repeated play and exploration. The graphics are an obvious product of their time, but they stand up surprisingly well to the ravages of time thanks to their styling. The game uses a colourful and distinctive palette, giving it a unique visual style that stands out among other titles of the era.

The game's soundtrack, including the music and sound effects, is competent, if not overly distinctive. The voice acting adds a humorous touch and gives personality to specific characters, adding to the overall experience.

Agent Armstrong is not a flawless play. Its straightforward story, occasional control issues, and graphics that can look dated today can be a hindrance to modern gamers. Still, it has its charms and may appeal to fans of retro games and those looking for a solid action platformer with a distinctive style. If you've ever enjoyed classic action games from the turn of the millennium, Agent Armstrong is a title that's at least worth checking out.
