Advanced V.G.
Description
Advanced V.G. is a PlayStation fighting game from 1996 that, while it has remained rather in the background of the titles of the time, is definitely worthy of attention due to several of its unique features. Developed by TGL, this game is part of the popular Variable Geo series, which combines the fighting genre with slight anime elements and focuses on female fighting characters, which was unusual at the time.
One of the strongest aspects of Advanced V.G. is its graphics. For a game released in the mid-nineties, it features surprisingly detailed sprites and fluid animations that add dynamism to the combat. Characters are designed with the care typical of anime style, making them captivating not only in appearance but also in their unique designs and personalities. Combat arenas, though less variable, provide an adequate setting for fast-paced game action.
The gameplay itself sticks to traditional combat mechanisms, but brings some interesting innovations. Each character has his own set of special attacks, which are not only visually appealing but also strategically important. The combination of different strikes and abilities gives players room for different tactics and fighting styles. However, compared to some of its competitors, the game's mechanics can feel a little clunky at times and take some getting used to.
As for the storyline, Advanced V.G. offers a typical plot centered around a tournament of female fighters, which isn't particularly original, but will provide fans of the genre with enough motivation to progress through the game. Each character has their own reasons for participating in the tournament, adding some depth to the game. The dialogue between characters and their individual endings give the game a certain charm that blends nicely with the combat layout.
The soundtrack is solid, though not exceptional. The music that accompanies the fights perfectly underscores the action pace, and the sound effects of punches and special attacks are satisfyingly dramatic. The dubbing of the characters, though it can come across as overly theatrical at times, brings just the right amount of anime atmosphere to the game.
Advanced V.G. for PlayStation may never have achieved the status of some of its contemporaries, but its qualities cannot be overlooked. It's a title that deserves a place in the hearts of fighting game fans if only because it dared to bring something a little different to the world of in-game combat. If you are a lover of fighting games and also a fan of the anime style, this game should definitely not escape your attention.
