Home Alone 2: Lost in New York
Description
Home Alone 2: Lost in New York is a classic DOS game from 1992, developed by Manley & Associates and published by Capstone Software. The game translates the popular Kevin McCallister movie story into the world of computer games, but despite all the efforts and nostalgia it may evoke, it unfortunately fails to live up to expectations.
The player takes on the role of Kevin, a young boy who finds himself lost in the sprawling city of New York after he misjudges a plane and finds himself far from his family. The game's story unfolds from Kevin's encounter with notorious robbers, Harry and Marv, known as the "Sticky Bandits", who he must once again deal with.
The game's graphics match the technological possibilities of the early 90s. The environments are made up of simple sprites that faithfully replicate scenes from the film, but their quality may make today's gamers laugh rather than impress. Similarly, it makes more use of a pastel colour palette than basic character animation and lifeless backgrounds, which sometimes makes it difficult to distinguish key elements in the environment.
The gameplay mechanics seem straightforward at first glance - Kevin must navigate through several levels inspired by locations from the film, such as the Plaza Hotel, the streets of New York, Duncan's Toy Chest, and the operating room. The problem, however, comes in the execution itself, which is unnecessarily frustrating. The controls are clunky and don't always follow the player's instructions exactly, which is a major problem in a platform game, especially when it comes to jumping and dodging enemies. Poor controls are a problem that can get frustrating very quickly.
The audio side of the game is similarly bad. The tunes and sound effects, although inspired by the original John Williams film soundtrack, quickly become monotonous and the quality is mediocre. For some, this may be a nostalgic throwback to the early days of PC gaming, but others are likely to quickly reach for the mute button.
Enemies, such as Harry and Marv, are recurring challenges against which Kevin must set traps and employ clever tricks. While some sections can be entertaining and reminiscent of cinematic moments, other parts drag on with a necessary repetitiveness and occasional lack of logic in the game.
Home Alone 2: Lost in New York for DOS is a game deeply rooted in its time. It offers a certain amount of nostalgia and fun, especially for those who remember the DOS era of gaming. However, the technical limitations of the era, clunky controls and monotonous game mechanics ensure that it will come to the fore primarily as a historical curiosity rather than a genuinely entertaining video game. It certainly had something going for it in its time, but by today's standards of gameplay and technical quality, it unfortunately cannot stand up.
