Age of Sail
Description
Age of Sail, released in 1996 for the Windows operating system, was one of the first strategy games to focus on naval warfare. For me, a longtime editor and computer game player who has written quite a few reviews, this game was one of the biggest surprises.
The gameplay of this game is brilliantly thought out, giving a sense of strategic planning and tactics. The player chooses one of the naval powers, such as England, Spain or France, and then must go on to do battle with other heroes of the sea. In each campaign, which is divided into several chapters, it is necessary to complete set tasks such as conquering certain ports or sinking the enemy fleet.
One of the most interesting elements of this game is the combat system. Each ship has its own unique characteristics and each offers different tactics of combat. Victory in this game is not only about the number of ships, but mainly about the effective use of your own arsenal and tactics. There is a wide range of ships to choose from, from small sailing sloops to huge galleons.
Graphically the game may not surprise, but at the same time it cannot be said to be bad. Each ship is detailed and the sea environment is realistically depicted. The music creates a nice atmosphere, but after longer playing it starts to feel monotonous.
The only critical point of this game is the lack of multiplayer. Although it is a strategy game that offers enjoyable gameplay even in single player, one would have liked the possibility to compete with other players from all over the world.
Given the year of release, it is understandable that the game does not include a final version. Fortunately, however, the developers have released several patches that have removed the biggest bugs and improved the gameplay.
Overall, I can say that Age of Sail is a game worth trying. For fans of strategy games, especially those with a nautical theme, this game will be a great choice. The gameplay is fun and offers the chance to experience sailing in historic battleships. The graphics may be a bit dated, but that can be forgiven. The game has become a pioneer in the naval strategy genre and has earned its place among legends despite some shortcomings.
