Police Tactical Training
Description
Police Tactical Training, released in 2001 for the Windows platform, attempts to bring players an intense police training simulation experience. At first glance, the game might promise a whiff of the realistic tactics and careful planning that is common in real police units. Unfortunately, despite the ambitious concept, the game ultimately offers a rather awkward experience.
The game's graphics remain deeply rooted in their era, which in itself wouldn't necessarily be a detriment if the visuals served to complement the rich gameplay mechanics. However, the character models are austere and the environments mostly feel desolate and static, which breaks the immersion. Sound effects are similarly mediocre, with gunfire and other sounds appearing repetitive and somewhat flat.
Where Police Tactical Training really fails, however, is in game design and mechanics. Missions often don't fit into the "tactical" category, and players are often presented with situations that require quick and unpredictable reactions rather than strategic thought. The artificial intelligence of both opponents and allies is frustrating, exhibiting poor adaptability to player movements and frequent errors in decision making, which can cause unnecessary repetition of missions.
The game has attempted to offer a variety of equipment and specializations, which could theoretically increase replayability. In practice, however, the different options have minimal impact on the overall gameplay experience, as missions tend to be linear and often do not depend on the strategy or equipment the player chooses. Individual missions are almost disposable and fail to keep the player on the screen for long periods of time.
Police Tactical Training had the potential to be a title that could draw players into the realistic world of a police SWAT team. However, due to many flaws in the visuals, boring game mechanics and weak AI, the intention missed the mark. The game thus remains more of a curiosity from the early 21st century than a true gem among tactical simulators.
