Age of Empires

Description

Age of Empires is a series of real-time strategy video games that were initially developed by Ensemble Studios and distributed by Xbox Game Studios. The games are set in historical periods and feature real-time battles. Age of Empires was the first game ever made, and it came out in 1997. As of the 28th of October, 2021, a total of nine games belonging to the series have been made available to the public.

Age of Empires studied historical events from the Stone Age all the way up to the Iron Age in Europe, Africa, and Asia. The expansion game focuses on the rise of the Roman Empire and its subsequent spread throughout the known world. The second installment in the series, Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings, took place during the Middle Ages, while the expansion pack focused in part on the conquest of the Aztec Empire by the Spanish. Age of Empires III continued with three more games that focused on the early modern period. This was a time when Europeans were colonizing the Americas and many Asian kingdoms were experiencing a decrease in power. Age of Empires Online, a separate installment, is a free-to-play online game that makes use of Games for Windows Live. This installment takes a different strategy than the previous ones. Age of Mythology was a spin-off game that was set in the same time period as the original Age of Empires game, but its primary concentration was on the mythological aspects of Greek, Egyptian, and Norse mythology. Age of Empires IV, the fourth principal entry in the series, was made available for purchase on October 28, 2021.

Over 25 million copies of the Age of Empires series have been sold, making it a commercially successful franchise. Some of the success of the series has been attributed by reviewers to its focus on history and its commitment to fair play. The artificial intelligence (AI) participants in this game have fewer advantages than they do in many of the series' other competitors.

The plots of the games in the series are based on real-world historical occurrences. The historical events depicted in Age of Empires take place in Europe and Asia between the Stone Age and the Classical period. Its growth, known as The Rise of Rome, corresponds to the establishment and expansion of the Roman Empire. Both the original Age of Kings game and its spin-off for the Nintendo DS take place during the Middle Ages in Europe and Asia. The expansion pack for Age of Kings called The Conquerors takes place during the same time period as the base game, but it also includes scenarios concerning the conquest of the Aztec Empire by the Spanish, as well as Attila the Hun and El Cid. The events of Age of Empires III and its first expansion, The WarChiefs, both take place in the Americas during the time period of European colonialism. The growth of Asia during this time period coincides with the beginning of the empire's second expansion, known as the Asian Dynasties. The Greek and Egyptian civilisations play a significant role in Age of Empires Online. Age of Mythology, a spin-off of the main series, and The Titans, an expansion pack for Age of Mythology, both take place during the Bronze Age but emphasize mythology rather than history as their primary topics.
