Bandit Kings of Ancient China
Description
Bandit Kings of Ancient China, released in 1990 for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), is a truly unique piece in the palette of period titles. Created and published by the Japanese company Koei, this strategy game follows a series of historical simulations that were hugely successful, especially on PC platforms. Bringing a complex strategy game to the somewhat more limited capabilities of the NES console was a bold and risky move, but one that yielded unexpected results.
The game is set in 12th century China and is inspired by the novel "Tales of the Water Braid", one of the classic works of Chinese literature. The player takes on the role of one of the bandits tasked with uniting the scattered bands and fighting corruption and oppression from the ruling dynasty. The historical context and rich plot give the game incredible depth and authenticity, making it a real treat for history buffs in computer games. The graphics in the game are of course limited by the hardware capabilities of the NES. However, pixel art was at a high level at the time and Bandit Kings of Ancient China certainly doesn't look cheap. The character designs are detailed and the individual environments are distinctive and colourful. The music that accompanies the game uses typical 8-bit sounds that still manage to conjure up the atmosphere of ancient China and give the game a punchy rhythm. The gameplay itself is quite complex. The player must manage resources, build armies, expand their influence, and make strategic choices in order to survive and eventually thrive. The amount of options and strategies can be overwhelming at first, which can be a bit daunting for newcomers. However, for those who enjoy challenges and deep strategic experiences, it is an immensely rewarding experience. Diplomacy, warfare and economics are key aspects that need to be carefully balanced. However, the game also has its weaknesses. Users who want to quickly dive into the action and expect a straightforward adventure may be disappointed. Additionally, the controls via the NES controller, which were not ideal for such a complex game, can be frustrating for players to get used to at first. The slow pace of the game and the need for careful planning may also be a hindrance for some players.
That being said, Bandit Kings of Ancient China is a game that is definitely worth your attention, especially if you are interested in strategy games and historical themes. While it may require patience and a willingness to learn, it will reward you with a deep and thoughtful gameplay experience that was truly uncommon on the NES platform at the time of its release. With this game, Koei has once again proven that she is a master at combining history and game design, making Bandit Kings of Ancient China an immortal gem in the NES game catalog.
