Back to the Future Part II & III

Description

Back to the Future Part II & III for the NES is a title that tries to live up to the expectations of fans of the famous film trilogy, but unfortunately fails in many ways. Developed by Beam Software and published by LJN in 1990, this game offers an ambiguous experience that leaves players more disappointed than excited.
The story follows the familiar plot lines of the films, with the player taking on the role of time-travelling Marty McFly to fix the disruption to the time continuum. This fidelity to the source material could be the game's main strength if it wasn't accompanied by so many gameplay flaws. On the technical side, the game struggles with occasional choppy animation and mediocre graphics that fail to bring the magic of the film world to video game form. The main stumbling block, however, is the gameplay. The controls are imprecise and frustrating, which might be forgivable if the game didn't present such a high difficulty level. The environments and quests are monotonous and the level design often lacks logic and cohesion. Players encounter repetitive enemies and obstacles that frustrate rather than motivate further play. The soundtrack also falls well short of expectations. The music and sound effects are basic and often repetitive, which combined with the uninteresting gameplay makes for a monotonous and unmemorable experience. Compared to other titles from the era that boast elaborate soundtracks, this game is lackluster.
In conclusion, Back to the Future Part II & III for the NES is a disappointment that fails to live up to the full potential of its famous predecessor. Although it has a basic premise and a theme that could have been engaging, its execution is unsatisfying and underdeveloped. It may be an interesting curiosity for fans of the film trilogy, but from a gameplay perspective it is a title that will quickly fall into obscurity.
