Formula Karts

Description
Formula Karts, released in 1997 for the SEGA Saturn console, is one of those racing games that naively wants to bring players the thrill and adrenaline of karting, but instead yearns for something more balanced. The game, developed by Manic Media Productions, attempts to combine realistic racing physics with arcade gameplay, but as a result fails to find the right balance that racing game fans would like.
Graphically, Formula Karts on the SEGA Saturn tries to take advantage of the console's technical capabilities, but unfortunately the track and vehicle handling remains below the level of playfulness offered by other titles of the time. Details on the tracks are often too sketchy and monotonous, which loses visual appeal after a few races. The karts themselves are fairly well modelled, but their movements and animations lack fluidity and a realistic feel.
In terms of gameplay, Formula Karts tries to offer an intense experience, but the driving itself leaves much to be desired. The physiology of the vehicles often feels unpredictable and un-fluid, leading to frustration rather than actual fun. The sense of speed is occasionally dampened by the game's lack of framerate and technical limitations.
The audio component of the game is borderline average. Motorsounds are repetitive and uninspired, which detracts from the authenticity of the driving experience. The musical soundtrack is unobtrusive, but neither does it offer distinctive melodies that the player might remember as a defining characteristic of the game.
Formula Karts also struggles with a lack of content. It offers several different tracks and game modes, but their diversity and interest is not enough to keep the player engaged for any length of time. The multiplayer mode brings some fun when playing with friends, but isn't innovative enough to be one of the reasons to keep coming back to this game.
All in all, Formula Karts is a game that in theory could offer a great racing experience, but in practice fails to deliver what it promises. Sloppy controls, bland graphics and poor content cause the game to get lost in a sea of mediocrity. I would recommend fans of racing games to seek out other titles from the era that can offer a more satisfying and comprehensive racing experience.
